HH Swami Shantanand Saraswathi's 75th Birthday celebrations
5th - 7th April, 2009
The Temple of Fine Arts Kuala Lumpur.
I played a duet with Kalpana Paranjothy on Monday 6th April, along with Vick Ramakrishnan on the tabla. We presented something unusual this time, the Raga Champakali. Both Kalpana and I had practised a full feature gat, including alap, jod, jhala, vialmbit gat and drut gat with jhala. Since this is not a common raga, we were a little apprehensive, especially when we got to now that our guru, Ustad Usman Khan, wold be among the audience!!
However, at the end of the show, Guruji told us that he liked it very much, and even asked for a recording to take back to Pune and let the other students there have a listen.
It was a good experience. Kalpana and I now plan on doing a full length concert together in July, with some time for individual solo's, then a duet performance. Kalpana already has a name in mind for the concert - Artha Naari!!
Usmanji played on the 7th evening with Prakash, presenting Raga Bhoopali and Raga Shunmugapriya as his main pieces, then ending with Bhairavi. The Shunmugapriya reinded all of us of his theme composition for the dance drama Taj Mahal, where he rendered this gat as a duet with Sarangi maestro Faiyaz Khan.
